Ever since I read (listened to) the Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love, I have been dying to try Pig Candy. Well, luckily, I got to try it out first hand at the SPQ Million Queen March Weekend......it was everything I had dreamed it would be. While reading (and listening to, just because it's soooo much more entertaining hearing it all in HRH Queen Boss Jill's own voice) the Sweet Potato Queens Big Ass Cookbook and Financial Planner, I came up with the clever idea of doing a blog just like Julie Powell did with the Julia Childs recipes. So here we go.....follow my progress as I attempt to whip up each of the tried, true and tested recipes loved by the SPQ.

A Good Ol' Heaping Helping Of Southern Goodness

I need to have a t-shirt made - "Have Sweet Potato Queens Big Ass Cookbook, will travel". I'm currently in Denver, CO visiting my 'once-upon-a-time-sister-in-law' and, since we are both from West Virginia (most people consider that a southern state), I, of course, did not leave home without my copy of The Sweet Potato Queens Big Ass Cookbook and Financial Planner.
We thumbed through the cookbook and agreed on a couple of recipes to try out for dinner last night. After a nice, long walk through a couple of parks located next to her house, we arrived at the local supermarket and gathered up the ingredients we needed for our 'down-home, butter my butt and call me a biscuit, Lord help me I miss my mamma meal'.
This particular meal consisted of two recipes from the SPQ cookbook - Stinky Bread & Corn and Beans and 'Maters and Bacon. We decided the perfect compliment to these two dishes would be BBQ chicken on the grill, and so, there we found ourselves back home and ready to assemble our works of art. Now I must confess, we fudged a little - we replaced the lima beans in the 'Corn and Beans and 'Maters and Bacon' with pinto beans, it's a West Virginia thing I guess.
We mixed and stirred; cut, stuffed and slathered; baked, broiled and grilled - a couple of hours later we were sitting down to one of those 'eating out of control' meals. Needless to say, once all of our plates were licked clean after 3 helpings each, we called in a crane to lift our asses away from the table so we could clean up the kitchen.

Corn and Beans and 'Maters and Bacon - one word for this....Heaven! Oh yeah, and I'm eating what little bit was leftover for breakfast :)

Stinky Bread - it's cheesy, buttery and, of course, stinky. It was all we could do to leave 2 slices for the boys when they got home. A friend of my 'once-upon-a-time-sister-in-law' showed up for a quick visit during dinner, she had read a couple of the SPQ books in a book club and just had to try a slice of the Stinky Bread for herself - her eyes rolled in the back of her head and I think her heart skipped a beat!

Today we will attempt one of the desserts from the SPQ cookbook. I'll report on that one later, if we're not induced in a sugar coma afterwards.

Jamie, that same friend (Lori) stopped by on Sunday and started talking about the Stinky Bread!! I had forgotten that she was here when we made it. I swear that she started drooling when talking about it again. I can honestly say that it is the very best bread I have ever ever eaten. Who cares if it is stinky and gives you stinky breath!!!
