Ever since I read (listened to) the Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love, I have been dying to try Pig Candy. Well, luckily, I got to try it out first hand at the SPQ Million Queen March Weekend......it was everything I had dreamed it would be. While reading (and listening to, just because it's soooo much more entertaining hearing it all in HRH Queen Boss Jill's own voice) the Sweet Potato Queens Big Ass Cookbook and Financial Planner, I came up with the clever idea of doing a blog just like Julie Powell did with the Julia Childs recipes. So here we go.....follow my progress as I attempt to whip up each of the tried, true and tested recipes loved by the SPQ.

Ooooh God - SPQ Recipe Recap

It has been almost one month now since I started the Jamie/Jill SPQ Big Ass Cookbook Project and....for someone who never cooks....I have managed to try out 12 of the recipes in the book:

  1. Trouble Monkey - a deadly concoction of libations that could very well spell out T-r-o-u-b-l-e.
  2. Heaven on a Cracker - skip the cracker, my friends decided this was good enough to eat on a whole slice of bread!
  3. Atlanta Allelujah! - chocolate and peanut butter.....need I say more?
  4. Pig Candy - a lot of bacon and a little sugar and.....Voila!
  5. Love Lard - 3 very odd ingredients = melt in your mouth magnificence
  6. No-Pain, Plenty-Gain Coffee Cake - Holy cinnamon roll!.....this was my fav thus far!
  7. Queen Dip - cheesy crab dip fit for a Queen!
  8. Hershey Bar Pie - Seriously, do I have to explain this?....it's chocolate on chocolate - YUM!
  9. Armadillo Hunter's Shrimp - I did not personally make this one....I begged a male friend to do it for me while I sipped numerous Trouble Monkeys.
  10. New Allison's Mambo Margaritas - a funky twist on a classic - so easy and so refreshing!
  11. Miss Lexie's Pineapple Casserole - the perfect side dish for your Easter ham....or just to eat straight out of the dish.
Last but not least.....#12 Coconut Caramel Pie - also fondly known by HRH Jill as "Oh God!" because with just one bite, that will be what you will be exclaiming. I made this one to share with my friends Tom and Laura while we celebrated and mourned the season finale of Rupaul's Drag Race. Besides the obvious...coconut and caramel....one of the ingredients is sweetened condensed milk. Now I had never tasted plain ol' sweetened condensed milk before, so I decided to lick the spoon I used to scrap this gooey stuff out of the can - "OMG!" You beat this gooey richness with a couple of other ingredients to make the pie filling - "OMG!" Look.....all I'm saying is that I'm already saying "Oh God" and the pie isn't even finished yet!In the freezer it goes for a few hours, dessert time falls upon us and..........yep, you guessed it - "OMG!"
